The Happy Ever After Playlist by Abby Jimenez
The Happy Ever After Playlist Review: A Heartfelt Romance With Humor, Grief, and Unexpected Depth
If you enjoy contemporary romance with a strong emotional core, relatable characters, and just enough rom-com energy without leaning too heavily into spice, The Happy Ever After Playlist is absolutely worth adding to your reading list. Abby Jimenez has quickly become one of my favorite authors because her books tend to hit that perfect middle ground between emotional and lighthearted. They feel realistic while still giving readers the comfort and chemistry you want from a romance novel.
A Unique Romance Premise That Pulls You In
This story follows Sloan Monroe, who is still navigating immense grief after losing her fiancé, when a dog unexpectedly jumps into her car and completely changes the course of her life. That dog, Tucker, ultimately leads her to Jason Larsen, a wildly popular musician whose connection with Sloan slowly develops into a heartfelt romance.
Starting the story with a random dog leaping into someone’s car immediately made me feel like this was going to turn into a cute, emotional, and slightly chaotic love story in the best way. Overall, I really enjoyed the premise and thought Abby Jimenez did a great job balancing humor with heavier emotional themes.

What Didn’t Fully Work for Me
That said, this was not my favorite Abby Jimenez book. While the storyline was charming and emotionally layered, there were a few parts that pulled me out of the story a bit.
The biggest one for me was the idea that Sloan was a huge fan of Jason’s music but somehow had no idea what he looked like despite him being incredibly famous. In today’s world of social media, streaming platforms, interviews, and endless online content, that felt a little unrealistic to me.
And then there is the dog situation. *SPOILER ALERT* When Sloan and Jason break up, Jason leaves Tucker with her. As someone who has what I would absolutely consider a “soul dog,” I had a really hard time believing someone would willingly leave their dog behind like that. For me, that emotional detail felt harder to accept than almost anything else in the book.
The Emotional Depth Was Surprisingly Strong
One of the things I appreciated most about this novel was its emotional maturity. I loved the way Sloan and Jason reconnect with Jason’s ex during a difficult period in her life. It added nuance to the story and reminded readers that people are rarely just “good” or “bad.”
Sometimes difficult behavior comes from pain, insecurity, or unresolved struggles, and I appreciated that the book acknowledged those layers instead of taking the easier route. That emotional complexity gave the story more depth than a typical light contemporary romance.
Predictable Ending, But in a Good Way
The ending was fairly predictable, but honestly, I did not mind that at all. Sometimes contemporary romance readers want the comfort of knowing where things are heading, and Abby Jimenez delivers that emotional payoff well.
While this was not a five-star read for me personally, it was still a heartfelt and enjoyable romance with memorable emotional moments, lovable characters, and plenty of charm.
Final Thoughts on the Happily Ever After Playlist
Overall, I would definitely recommend giving The Happy Ever After Playlist a shot, especially if you enjoy emotional contemporary romance novels with humor, grief healing arcs, lovable dogs, and realistic relationship dynamics.
And honestly, at this point, I would probably give any Abby Jimenez book a chance.
