Every Summer After by Carley Fortune
Every Summer After Review: Nostalgic Summer Romance With Serious “One More Chapter” Energy
I honestly do not know where to begin with Every Summer After by Carley Fortune because this book felt like summer nostalgia bottled into a romance novel.
And to be fair, I am probably the perfect target audience for this kind of story because if a book involves summer, lakes, first love, emotional yearning, or reading by the water, I am already halfway convinced I am going to enjoy it. There is just something about floating in a pool or sitting on the beach while reading a book centered around summers gone by that feels elite. And Every Summer After absolutely fits that vibe.
The Timeline Structure Completely Hooked Me
One of my favorite things about this book was the pacing and structure.
I am an absolute sucker for books that move through different timelines because I feel like you get such a deeper understanding of the characters and their relationships. Instead of just being told two people have history, you actually get to experience it unfolding little by little over time.
The story follows Persephone “Percy” Fraser and Sam Florek across six summers spent at a lake in Barry’s Bay, while also moving between the past and present timelines as adults. That back-and-forth storytelling style kept me incredibly engaged because every chapter slowly revealed another layer of what happened between them.
Honestly, it gave me major The Summer I Turned Pretty vibes, but in a more mature, adult way. The emotional tension, the nostalgia, the complicated first love dynamic, the lake setting… it definitely scratches a similar itch while exploring older characters dealing with adult consequences.
And yes, I immediately thought, “This needs to become a movie.” Then I found out there is already an adaptation in development for Amazon Prime Video and honestly? Perfect choice. This story feels made for a beautifully shot summer drama series.

The Romance Feels Emotional and Messy in a Real Way
What I appreciated most about Every Summer After was how emotionally immersive it felt.
Sam and Percy’s relationship develops over years rather than instantly, which makes everything hit harder emotionally. You really feel the comfort, familiarity, friendship, attraction, and eventual heartbreak layered throughout their connection. The chemistry between them feels believable because the story takes time building it instead of rushing straight into romance.
Sam especially felt very easy to root for. He has that quiet, dependable, emotionally grounded personality that works perfectly in this kind of nostalgic romance story.
At the same time, the book also captures something difficult about growing up: how one mistake can completely alter relationships that once felt permanent. Honestly, that emotional tension is what kept me turning the pages.
The Ending Was My Biggest Struggle
Now… let’s talk about the ending. This was probably the one part of the book that did not fully work for me.
Without spoiling too much, the resolution felt a little too clean considering the magnitude of what happened between the characters. I completely understand that people make impulsive and messy decisions when they are young, especially when emotions are involved, but cheating on someone with their brother at such an impressionable age is a massive betrayal to overcome, especially when first love is involved.
That kind of emotional damage tends to leave permanent cracks, and for me, the ending wrapped things up a little more neatly than I personally expected. I think I wanted just a bit more emotional unpacking before everyone reached the happy ending phase.
That said, I still appreciated where the story landed emotionally overall. It may not have been my ideal ending, but it still gave readers that hopeful, satisfying summer romance feeling the book was clearly aiming for.
A Surprisingly Important Detail: The Physical Book Itself
I also need to mention something random but deeply important to fellow book lovers… or maybe it’s just me. The pages in my copy of Every Summer After were BLINDING white and honestly? I loved it.
There is something about crisp white pages that makes a book feel fresh and clean to me. Pair that with the soft, almost suede-like texture of the cover, and this book was genuinely enjoyable to hold while reading.
Listen, the physical reading experience matters. The smell of a new book? Elite. A soft matte cover? Incredible. Bright clean pages? Say less.
Final Thoughts on Every Summer After
Overall, Every Summer After was an emotional, nostalgic, beautifully paced summer romance that completely kept my attention from start to finish.
If you enjoy second-chance romance books, dual timelines, lakeside summer settings, emotional first-love stories, and books that make you feel nostalgic for summers you may not have even lived yourself, this is absolutely worth reading.
This was my first Carley Fortune novel, and it definitely made me excited to pick up another one this summer.
