Yours Truly by Abby Jimenez
Yours Truly Review: Jacob Maddox Officially Ruined All Other Fictional Men for Me
Before I even get into my actual review of Yours Truly by Abby Jimenez, I need to address the back of the book for a second.
“She wonders just how she can resist this quietly sexy new doctor.”
Okay… why are women in romance novels always trying to resist the genuinely kind, emotionally available, quietly attractive man who treats them with respect? Respectfully, where are these men located in real life and why are fictional women constantly fighting for their lives trying NOT to fall in love with them?
Okay, sorry. That was harsh. But also honest. Because if a man walked into my life bringing emotional intelligence, kindness, communication skills, and snacks? The resistance would be nonexistent.
My First Abby Jimenez Book (And Certainly Not My Last)
Yours Truly was actually my first Abby Jimenez book, which I now realize is the second installment in the Part of Your World series. And honestly? That just made me more excited to go back and read the others because now I need to know everything about this interconnected universe she has created.
One thing I have quickly learned about Abby Jimenez is that she does an incredible job creating crossover characters and making all of her books feel connected without making new readers feel lost. It gives her stories this cozy familiarity where characters continue existing beyond their individual novels, which I absolutely love as a reader.
And after finishing this book, I fully understand why so many people adore her writing style.

Dr. Jacob Maddox is One of My Favorite Male Characters Ever
I just have to say it: Jacob Maddox might genuinely be one of my favorite male characters I have ever read in a romance novel. Not because he is some over-the-top billionaire fantasy man and not because he is unrealistically perfect. But because he feels emotionally real.
Jacob struggles with severe social anxiety, awkwardness, overthinking, and constantly feeling misunderstood by the people around him. As someone who deals with anxiety myself, there were so many moments throughout this book where I stopped and thought, “Yep. Same.”
Every time I read a character whose anxiety actually feels authentic instead of exaggerated or romanticized, I become instantly invested. Abby Jimenez handled Jacob’s anxiety with so much care and realism that it made him impossible not to root for.
And honestly, the way he loves people? Devastating. He’s not flash or performative, he’s just deeply genuine and selfless in a way that sneaks up on you emotionally.
The Emotional Weight of This Story Hits Hard
While this book absolutely has humor and romance woven throughout it, there is also a tremendous amount of emotional depth underneath the surface.
Briana Ortiz is carrying an overwhelming amount emotionally throughout the story. Between her divorce, burnout, and the heartbreaking situation involving her brother Benny needing a kidney transplant, there is this constant heaviness lingering behind her interactions.
And Benny’s storyline genuinely hit me hard.
You can feel how exhausted he is. Not just physically, but emotionally. He reaches a point where life no longer feels like living, and that emotional hopelessness was written in a way that felt painfully human.
Then Jacob steps in and quietly changes everything. And what makes it even more impactful is that Jacob never does it for recognition or praise. He helps because that is simply who he is at his core.
Which brings me back to my original point… Why exactly are we resisting this man again?
Why the Romance in Yours Truly Works so Well
What I loved most about the romance between Briana and Jacob was the nuance.
This is not a story built entirely on dramatic misunderstandings or forced tension. Instead, it focuses heavily on emotional vulnerability, trauma, fear, and the ways people protect themselves after being hurt.
Briana’s hesitation actually made sense to me because the story takes time to show why she struggles to trust love and stability again. Jacob’s anxiety also adds complexity to their relationship because both characters are navigating emotional wounds in very different ways.
Their relationship develops through letters, friendship, support, and understanding rather than just physical attraction, which made the romance feel stronger and more believable.
Final Thoughts on Yours Truly
Overall, Yours Truly completely exceeded my expectations and officially turned me into an Abby Jimenez fan.
It is emotional, funny, deeply human, and filled with characters who feel layered rather than perfect. More importantly, it treats anxiety, grief, burnout, and love with a level of care that made the story feel authentic.
And Jacob Maddox? Top-tier fictional man. No notes.
